Drop-Down Pages Gadget Menu in Blogger Dynamic View

Here's a quickie. By default, when you add pages to your Pages gadget in Blogger's Dynamic View, you'd end up with stretching horizontal links. With this simple tweak, you can transform it to a drop-down styled menu instead! This is a response to blog reader OnlyUs.

If you're using the old Blogger interface: Go to Dashboard - Design - Template Designer - Advanced - Add CSS - paste the following code - Press enter after the last character of the last line } - Apply to Blog.

If you're using the new Blogger interface: Go to Dashboard ('House' symbol) - Template - Customize - Advanced - Add CSS - paste the following code - Press enter after the last character of the last line } - Apply to Blog.
#header.header .header-drawer #pages.tabs ul li{
margin: 100000px;
}
Also, I've been busy with my school works lately. My apologies if I reply to you guys late. Cheers.

    In Dynamic Views is there a way to make a page title in the header-bar hyperlink to another website?

  7. On FlipCard, Magazine, Snapshot, and Timeline views....the Google +1 button appears at the top
    left next to the arrows.

    Can it be moved back down to where the facebook
    & twitter buttons are?

    ReplyDelete
  8. @Anon: Technically, it is possible. Practically, it is not. When we move an object, we need to specify how far it should move. Since your post length always change (post1 might be 200px, post2 might be shorter, say 100px), it cant be done.

  9. Is there a way to do this with only specific pages? Like in your example, what if I only wanted to group Static Page 1 and Static Page 2 together in a list called Static Pages and keep home separate?

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Anon: Nope, there isn't. It applies to all pages. There isn't an easy way to selective place static page links in a drop-down menu. Either all or nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So now I have the 'head' pages and the possibility for a drop down menu. How do add more pages in the separate pages then???

    Or was this tutorial just to make the pages menu go from horizontal to vertical?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Lady Guinevere: Well, this tutorial is purely cosmetic. You're right, it just changes the horizontal pages link into a drop-down menu. Add more pages like how you normally would.

    Cheers.

  17. @Abi: Right. Looks like your Archive gadget needs fixing. T'd suggest two ways.

    First thing first. Back up your template before you attempt any of the followings. Go to Dashboard - Template - Backup/Restore - Download Full Template - Save the resulting .xml file somewhere safe in your computer.

    1) Now, Go to Dashboard - Layout - Remove your archive gadget - Save Arrangement. Restart your browser, then re-add your archive gadget. See if it fixes your problem.

    2) If it doesnt, we'd go for a more extreme measure. But this method could reverse any hard HTML mods that you might have put in place in your blog. I can't tell if you have any. But fear not, since you've already backed up your template, you could always restore it should things go wrong. This is what you should do. Go to Dashboard - Template - Edit HTML - Proceed - Revert Widget Templates to Default - OK.

    All the best.

    @frenz: I can see your pages gadget just fine. Cheers.

  19. @Abi: I'd like to have a look at your template. Upload the .xml file that you've gotten (when you backed up your template) to a file hosting site, like rapidshare or megaupload. Leave the link to your file here. I'll download your template and see if I can figure what's wrong with it.

  23. So I actually want the stretched out horizontal links for my pages, not the drop down menu, and for some reason now when I go to my blog it is always defaulting to flipcard and a drop down menu! Is there any way to have it always be in sidebar view and is there code I can put in so the pages links are spread across?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi bobbie,

      The number of pages links that you have in your headers bar are too many to be displayed in a single line. That is why you're seeing an automatic-drop-down.

      As for the default view, yes you can set it to Sidebar view by going to Dashboard - Template - Customize - Template - Sidebar. You might previous customisation changes while changing to a new default view.

    2. Is there a way to wrap the pages to a second line. i want all my pages to appear horizontally?

    3. Hi admin,

      Making the pages gadget to go into multiple lines should not be an issue. But, the template script automatically places long pages link into a drop down menu, even if the multiple lines are configured. I still cant find a way to prevent this action.

      If you're referring to having your Dynamic Views choices to go on a horizontal link list, then you need to remove your pages from showing. As long as you have pages showing, the view choices will be forced to go on a Drop Down menu.

    I have a quick question. Above you show how your static pages can be "summarized" under one drop down menu. However I would like to determine myself which ones I would like to feature a drop down menu and which ones not. I hope I make myself clear :) So basically, for example I would like to have one static page called "About us" and a second page called "Explore" with a drop down menu.

      Delete
    6. Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately, whether or not you're seeing a drop-down menu depends on the screen-size that is used to view your blog. On large screens, the links would appear horizontally. Whereas in smaller screens (and minimized browser windows) the links would automatically resort to a drop-down menu. We can't squeeze the links horizontally if they're too long or too many.

You can, however, add the links that you'd commonly find a navbar to your Dynamic View template's menu bar by going to dashboard - Pages - New Page - Web Address.. I know this isn't what you're looking for, but this is the closest we have to an actual Navbar..

    1. Hi Mike,

      There's a bug within the Pages gadget that's pointing the links to a null-pointer. The blogger team has been notified of the issue and they are currently working on it, though, I must say, it's taking forever.. I had to halt few of my tutorials that involve pages gadgets from being published while waiting for them to fix this gadget.. You might wanna use a Linklist gadget as a temporary substitute. If you're using a Dynamic View template, your Linklist gadget will appear on your gadget dock. Not ideal, but that's all we got for now.

    1. Ah.. Right.. I think you're referring to a multi-level drop-down menu.. Unfortunately, there isnt a way to do this in Dynamic View templates at the moment. Just if you're wondering why, unlike the conventional templates, Dynamic Templates run mostly on scripts - that are hosted at Blogger's server. It isn't easy to make structural changes to DV templates due to this fact. For now, we are mostly limited to making cosmetic changes.

    1. Hello there,

      It appears your bar has resorted to a drop down menu not due to some code, but because you have too many links in your pages bar. When you have too many links in your pages gadget (or just a few with really long title), your bar will automatically turn into a drop down menu, naturally.

  53. Hi, I'm just trying out DV and I love the look of it... and your blog is so helpful regarding DV for this non-techy person! My question is somewhat related to your post: Can I divert the gadgets that appear on my sidebar to appear in the horizontal header bar at the top of the page? I recently added some pages and saw that they appear in the header- that looks great and I would love for the other gadgets to display that way. Specifically, search bar and archive list. Is this possible? My blog is http://boundtogetherforchrist.blogspot.com. Thanks!!

    1. Hello Annette,

      Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid your pages are the only item that can appear in your pages bar in that way. Well, not exactly. You can actually add individually links to the bar by going to Dashboard - Layout - Click Edit on your Pages gadget - Click on 'Add External Link' - add the URL of your post. As you might have seen/guessed, you need to add things individually one-by-one - it is not feasible to add all your posts there. I think there is a limit of 20 items or something to your pages gadget as well. But hey, if you have favourite posts that you'd like to pin to your pages gadget, this would be how :)

  54. Hi - I've been learning a lot from your articles! :)

    Is there a way to make the whole pages / views navigation bar stay in the same place? The header stays there but the Views / Pages bar disappears when you scroll down. Thanks!

    1. Hello Jane,

      I'm terribly sorry for the late reply. I've just checked your blog, and it appears fine - I don't see the double drop-down you've mentioned. Are you still seeing the issue?

    1. Hi Saravan,

      I'm afraid there isn't a way to add custom drop-down menu in DV yet - at least not that I know of.
